The full name of THPS is Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate, CAS No. is 55566-30-8, which has its own characteristics in terms of bactericidal effect, environmental protection characteristics, application, price, solubility and so on. Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphine sulfate(THPS) is used in aquaculture water treatment, garbage deodorization, indoor sterilization, oil field mining and other industries, but the use is very wide, and the effect is also very significant.

Mechanism of action

Quaternary phosphates are positively charged and can be selectively adsorbed by negatively charged bacteria, enter the cell membrane through penetration across the bacterial surface, impede the semi-permeability of the cell membrane, and further enter the cell interior, so that the cellular enzymes are blunted, the protein enzymes can not be produced, thereby denaturing proteins to achieve the role of killing bacterial cells. Its lipophilic group can dissolve and damage the fat wall on the cell surface, change the physical and chemical properties of the cell protoplasmic membrane, and the death of bacteria.

Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate is a very new biocide, which was first mass-produced as a precursor of flame retardant for dealing with cotton fiber products such as overalls. It was used in the UK as an effective biocide in cooling systems. Later, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphine sulfate was applied to oilfield water systems, and its exceptional effectiveness against sulfate-reducing bacteria made it the biocide of choice when there was H2S generation or inhibition of corrosion caused by sulfate-reducing bacteria.
